Glentoran Women 1-2 Birkirkara

Sun, 21/08/2022 - 19:14

Match Report courtesy of the Belfast Telegraph

Glentoran Women finished bottom of their Champions League group as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Maltese side Birkirkara in Romania.

The Danske Bank Premiership champions had taken the lead through defender Kelly Bailie, but second half goals from Raini Giusti and Charlene Zammit earned their opponents the win.

The result in what was essentially a third/fourth-placed play-off means the Glens finish bottom of the group and have exited the competition at the first hurdle.

Glentoran 3-1 Crusaders

Fri, 19/08/2022 - 22:57

Prior to kick-off there was a minute's applause as Glentoran remembered two legends who sadly passed away in the close season; former Chairman, John Crossen and former player, Bertie Wright. Both of these Glentoran stalwarts would have thoroughly enjoyed what was to follow, particularly the second half.

Olimpia Cluj 0-0 Glentoran Women (4-2 penalties)

Thu, 18/08/2022 - 20:03

Match Report courtesy of BBC Sport

Glentoran suffered a 4-2 defeat on penalties after their Women's Champions League first-round semi-final against Romanian champions Cluj was goalless.

Ayah Faisal Ayed Al-Majali and Mara Batea had good first-half chances for the hosts while Caragh Hamilton and Kerry Beattie went close for Glentoran.

Hamilton hit the post after the break and Beattie's right-foot shot was just wide for the Irish Premiership champions.

Cluj play in Sunday's Group 7 final.

Tomorrow's Gazette

Thu, 18/08/2022 - 10:39

The Glentoran Gazette team welcomes back its readers for the 2022/23 season. Because of technical difficulties we can't yet introduce our revamped layout for the campaign but the eagle-eyed among you will note Beth Stafford and Joe Burns’ new cover as well as some new features. Reluctantly due to a rise in printing costs, particularly the price of paper, we have had to increase our cover price for the first time in a decade but are confident that the Gazette remains unrivalled as the best read in the local game.
