Glentoran Under 20s had a good win at Newry Showgrounds yesterday through goals from Sean Wallace, Mal Smith and Peter McMahon. Robbie McDaid’s strong performances have been rewarded by winning the Supporters Glentoran Player of the Month vote for January.
Robbie was very influential throughout the month in a front three with Curtis Allen and new signiung Darren Murray. It can be fairly said that his direct running and his strength of character were largely responsible for overturning a deficit at home against Newry City as his rampaging down the right hand side delivered two pinpoint crosses that directly led to the two late goals that gave us our 2-1 victory.
A notable aspect of today's 5-0 win at Warrenpoint was the first team debut of young right back, Mal Smith when he was introduced as a second half substitute for John Herron.
Seventeen year old Mal joined the club as a ten year old. He has represented Northern Ireland at all levels so far and has scored in two NI Cup Finals. This season he is our Under 20s captain and has scored ten goals this season from right back!
Two goals from Lukasz Gwiazda and a brace from Darren Murray set the Glens up for an emphatic win at Warrenpoint in today's Danske Bank Premiership fixture.
The game had 5 goals, a penalty save and two red cards as the Glens climbed above Institute to 7th in the table. In a strange opening 10 minutes, Warrenpoint Town spent most of the time in Glentoran's half but found themselves two goals down.
Saturday 9th January 2019. Kick off 3.00pm
On Saturday we visit Milltown for the second time this season, looking for a better performance and result than on our last visit in September, when we conceded a late equaliser from Ciaran O’Connor after leading from the fourteenth minute through a John Herron header.
Another goal from Robbie McDaid saw Glentoran come from behind to take a deserved point at the Newry City Showgrounds as the two teams finally met up at the third attempt.
** After today's pitch inpection Newry City have announced that the game is on.
Each month we will conduct a poll for the fans player of the month. The poll will appear following the last game of each calendar month, January poll will close at 12pm on Friday 8th February, With the winner announced shortly after
