Glens Dream Team: Eurovision

Tue, 14/07/2020 - 01:39

Glentoran Gazette contributor and former editor, John Grayden, first saw the Glens play in May, 1959. In this series he picks imaginary sides from throughout the years in a random selection of categories. A few are factual while most are subjective and by no means definitive. While he has seen most of the players in action, a few from earlier eras are included because of their contribution to the club’s history.

Sharkie McClements and the wee Green Ball

Mon, 13/07/2020 - 10:58

Sharkie McClements and the wee Green Ball.

About a month or so ago, on a Friday morning after the previous evening’s communal applause for NHS and frontline workers, I received a message from an old friend and former workmate of mine. Many thanks to the Glentoran Supporters Committee (1923) for use of this  interview with Eddy Patrick from the Glentoran Gazette

What were your best moments in a Glens’ shirt?

I’d say my best and most memorable moments would be my firsts. First European match, first league win, first Irish cup win.

Favourite goal you scored for the Glens?

Has to be the one against Crusaders at the oval. It was half cleared to the edge of the box, and I volleyed it back across the keeper and into the far top corner.

My Favourite Photograph: Rab McCreery

Sun, 12/07/2020 - 01:09

This is the sixth in a series of interviews with former Glentoran players and managers where they talk about a photograph that means a lot to them.  This one was published in the Gazette when Sam Robinson spoke to the legendary Rab McCreery, who had a 10 year career at right back between 1972 and 1982, including the unique distinction of captaining the club to our unbeaten Gibson Cup win in 1980-1981

The latest of Brian McClelland's compelling series of articles on significant figures from Glentoran's history. Many thanks to the Glentoran Supporters Committee (1923) for use of this material.

FRANK GRICE:  Man of Destiny and Team Maker Supreme

He was undoubtedly a man of many parts, yet a man apart.  Player, club secretary, manager,  club secretary and manager were the roles he played for Glentoran with a dedication and ruthlessness found only in that rare breed of high achiever.
