Glentoran v Newry City
Friday 7th September 2018, Kick Off 7.45pm
On Friday evening we are delighted to welcome Newry City to the Oval for the first time since August 2010. The rise of Newry City from the fifth tier of Northern Ireland football to the Danske Bank Premiership through four promotions in just five seasons is one of the genuine feelgood stories in NI football in recent years. We have had some great battles with Newry City and Newry Town over the decades so the club and its supporters are warmly welcomed to East Belfast.
Well done to Glentoran Under 20s tonight on a good league 3-1 win over Glenavon. The Glens goals came from Paul O’Neill, Mal Smith and Darryl McKenna .
A full match report will follow in the U20s News section.
The draw for the 18/19 Shirt Sponsorship will take place on Friday 7th September at 7pm in the McLean suite before our match against Newry City. All sponsors are welcome to attend. We would like to thank everyone who sponsored a shirt for the 2018/19 season.
Conor Pepper has marked his first month as a Glentoran player by being voted the clear winner of the August Glentoran Supporters Player of the Month.
Conor played every minute of our five games in August and has been unambiguously identified as a driving force in our encouraging start to the season. He received a convincing 85% of votes in the online poll.
Former Glentoran player and Northern Ireland legend, Jimmy McIlroy was buried in his adopted home of Burnley on Friday 31st August. The ceremony was fittingly held at Turf Moor, home of Burnley FC. Glentoran was officially represented by David Hogg, a lifelong supporter now living in Cheshire.
David has sent us this account of the service. We thank David for his thoughts and hard work in preparing for the ceremony and ensuring that the club where it all started for Jimmy was well represented.
Service of Celebration for Jimmy McIlroy, MBE.
The teams came onto the pitch today with an announcement from the Glenavon tannoy in recognition that today marked Elliott Morris’ incredible 700th match for Glentoran, a full 16 years after making his debut. Elliott was offered the captaincy to mark the landmark but declined as he felt the team was more important than any personal milestone. A fantastic attitude from a true Glentoran legend.
Glentoran FC is delighted to announce the latest addition to the club’s sponsorship portfolio with an exciting new partnership with Russell's Food and Drink.
An Ulster Business top 100 company with fifteen outlets in the Greater Belfast area, Russell’s Food and Drink is a much loved and long established brand and employer in East Belfast. The partnership will be of significant benefit to Glentoran, Russell's Food and Drink and the Glentoran support.
