Obituary: Kieran Dowd

Sun, 26/01/2025 - 17:58

Glentoran Football Club would like to express sadness at the passing of our former Caretaker Manager Kieran Dowd at his home in Cork..

Kieran joined the club as First Team Coach in the summer of 1971 at the invitation of then manager Peter McParland. Peter resigned after the second Ulster Cup game, so by the end of August 1971 Kieran was appointed Caretaker Manager. A position he held for 13 games until the appointment of Scotsman Alex McRae. Kieran remained on the coaching staff as the Glens went on that season to win the League title for the 15th time in the club’s history.

Kieran left the Oval in September 1972 to take up the position as the inaugural Head of Sport in University College Cork, where he spent many happy years.

Deepest condolences to Kieran’s wife Una and to his children Garin, Kieran, Jackie, Connor, Nickie and Lyndel.
