Cliftonville Ladies 3-0 Glentoran Women

Thu, 22/06/2023 - 01:01

Glentoran Women crashed out of their second domestic cup in nine days with this heavy defeat at Solitude tonight.

The Glens were at full strength tonight and in a scoreless first half had a couple of efforts on the Reds goal. Top scorer Kerry Beattie was blocked in a one on one with the Reds keeper Rachel Norney. Norney was the home side’s hero again five minutes later with a brilliant save from a Jess Foy free kick.

The wheels started to come off for Glentoran five minutes into the second half when Northern Ireland captain Marissa Callaghan shot from inside the left of the Glens penalty box beat Ellie Scott over  her head at the near post.

Callaghan was again the Glens nemesis six minutes later. This time she again shot into top right corner from left edge of the penalty area.

The scoring was completed on 73 minutes when two former Glens players linked up as Danielle Maxwell headed home at the near post from a Hannah Doherty swirling corner.

So a definite wake up call for the Glens over the past nine days following a fantastic start to the season.

Next up for Glentoran Women is the next group game in the All-Ireland Cup comes on  Saturday in County Dublin when Peamount United provide the opposition.
