Cup Final Countdown- Halliday's Heroics

Fri, 03/05/2013 - 19:36

The final installment in our Cup Final Countdown before the big day tomorrow comes from our last two Irish Cup successes in 2001 and 2004 where Michael Halliday grabbed both winners.

Armagh City were our first opponents in the 2001 Irish Cup. Two goals from Justin McBride, one from the penalty spot, and another from Gary Smyth saw us safely over the first hurdle. Former Glentoran player, Alfie Stewart brought his Moyola Park team to the Oval in the next round but the Glens proved too good for the junior side; Rainey, McCann, Smyth and Nixon all on target in a 4-nil win.

Cup Final Countdown- A Little Bit Special, 1996

Thu, 02/05/2013 - 20:32

After the four wins in a row until 1989, Linfield ended our 1989 dreams of 5 in a row but we were back at it again by 1990. Defeating the old enemy in the Irish Cup semi-final was part of the infamous 7-UP season, where we beat Linfield in all 7 encounters with Gary Macartney scoring in each game. Portadown were Irish League Champions, looking to win the double and went into the game as favourites. With the game scoreless at half-time and Glentoran’s Macartney and Campbell both off injured things looked pretty bleak.
