Iconic items returned to Glentoran

Mon, 24/07/2023 - 20:06

Sam Robinson recounts here how just this month two iconic pieces of Glentoran history came home to the Bet McLean Oval.

The one thing I have learned when it comes to the history of Glentoran Football Club is that everything comes to those who wait.

If you are prepared to wait long enough.

The best stories start with a kind hearted person turning up out of the blue, carrying a bag.

East Belfast 0-3 Glentoran

Sat, 22/07/2023 - 16:17

Another great run out for the younger Glens players today ended in a good win over our local neighbours East Belfast at Tillysburn this afternoon.

The Glens took a two-goal lead into the half time break. The opener came in the first minute with   a deflected shot from recent first team signing Josh Kelly. This was followed eight minutes before the break with an unstoppable thunderbolt from skipper Marcus Kane.

Glentoran 1-1 Gzira United (13-14 on penalties)

Fri, 21/07/2023 - 02:09

An event packed 120 minutes but an ultimately devastating result for Glentoran as a tie dominated by penalty kicks was ultimately settled by them as the Glens failed to progress in the Europa Conference League.

Warren Feeney made two changes from the away leg. Fuad Sule had his first start with Aaron Wightman on the bench while as a result of Shay McCartan failing a fitness test this afternoon, Rory Donnelly started in his place.

Since ending their 45-year absence from European competition in 2018, Gżira United have played 9 away fixtures, recording 3 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats.

Tomorrow's Gazette

Wed, 19/07/2023 - 17:37

The first Gazette of a new season naturally places the focus on European competition and Beth Stafford’s cover sets the tone with the opening words of the fans’ favourite anthem rubbing shoulders with the Conference League trophy. In his first match programme message, new boss Warren Feeney praises the fans who travelled to Malta and says, while he was pleased with the team’s performance in Ta Qali, they need to repeat the exercise on Thursday.

Dundela 3-2 Glentoran

Tue, 18/07/2023 - 00:37

A very young Glentoran team – in which only skipper Marcus Kane, new signing Josh Kelly and returned loanee Jordan Jenkins had any real senior experience – did exceptionally well tonight to lose to a very experienced Dundela side (including our former Cup Winning defender Jay Magee) by one late goal in five.

Jordan Jenkins opened the scoring on 10 minutes but the young Glens went in 2-1 behind at the due to a penalty from ex-Ballymena stalwart Tony Kane and a well taken goal by former Glens and Glenavon winger Andy Hall.
