Everyone at Glentoran was saddened to hear of the passing last week of former player and long-time supporter and season ticket holder Mick O’Brien.

Mick with Bertie Wright
Dubliner Mick signed for the Glens when stationed at Aldergrove with the RAF in the late Fifties. While most of his playing career was with the Seconds, Mick was immensely proud of his one first team appearance when replacing the injured Sammy Hughes for a game against Linfield. After leaving the RAF Mick worked abroad for many years, but upon his return to Ireland resumed his love affair with the Glens. He became a familiar face at Glentoran games both home and away, making the journey north, often via public transport, from his home in Dublin.

He was a regular in the 1923 Committee clubroom at the Oval, regaling the regulars with tales of his world travels and time with the Glens over a half time cuppa, and was delighted to be appointed a Vice-President of the Committee. The thoughts of everyone at the Oval are with Mick’s family and friends at this sad time, especially his wife Marese and children Niall, Crea, Fergal and Sive.
Mick O’Brien, a true Glenman and one of life’s gentlemen. May he rest in peace.
