Fisher eyes BetMcLean Cup Semi-Final spot as Glens head to Ballymena

Mon, 06/01/2025 - 13:22

Glentoran forward David Fisher has set his sights on helping the Glens extend their unbeaten run and secure a BetMcLean Cup Semi-Final spot as Declan Devine’s side face Ballymena United at the Showgrounds on Tuesday 7th January (Kick-Off: 7:45pm).

The rescheduled Quarter-Final tie, originally postponed in December due to a waterlogged pitch, offers the Glens an opportunity to continue their impressive form, with the team unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions.

With a place in the County Antrim Shield Final already booked against holders Larne later this month, and fresh off a battling 4-2 victory over H&W Welders in the Irish Cup, the Glens are determined to preserve their unbeaten record in this season’s knock-out competitions.

David Fisher, who has registered six goals and three assists this season, including the crucial equaliser in Friday’s Irish Cup win over the Welders, spoke about the team’s determination to bring more silverware back to the BetMcLean Oval, starting with the challenge of overcoming Ballymena United.

David Fisher said: “We’re on a good run right now, but Declan has made it clear that we need to keep pushing hard and not get complacent. The lads are fully focused on taking things one game at a time and this Quarter-Final tie is a massive step towards achieving some silverware this season.

“Friday’s win over the Welders wasn’t straightforward, but it showed the character and determination we have in this squad. Everyone is pulling together and working hard for each other, and that’s exactly what you need to succeed in cup competitions. The fans deserve to see this club competing for trophies and we’re determined to give them something to celebrate.

Tuesday night’s clash with the Braidmen marks the third meeting between the two sides this season, with both teams having secured a victory apiece.

Ballymena United claimed a narrow 1-0 win at the Ballymena Showgrounds in the Sports Direct Premiership in September, while Glentoran responded with a commanding performance in November to secure victory in the Semi-Final of the County Antrim Shield.

The sides were also scheduled to meet twice in December, but both fixtures were postponed. A league encounter at The BetMcLean Oval was called off due to adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh, while the original date for this BetMcLean Cup Quarter-Final was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Looking ahead to Tuesday’s match, Fisher acknowledged the challenge of facing the Sky Blues at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

David said: “We know Ballymena will be a tough test, especially at their place. They’re a strong side with quality across the pitch, so we’ll need to be at our very best to get the result. It’s about staying focused, executing our game plan and bringing the same intensity and determination that have been key to our recent results.

“We’re on a fantastic run of form, and the belief in the squad is growing with every match. We’re determined to keep that momentum going and build on it as we continue to push forward this season.”

The 23-year-old Londoner has been a key figure in Glentoran’s attacking line since joining from AFC Wimbledon in 2023. Discussing his form, Fisher discussed his determination to keep improving under the guidance of Declan Devine.

Fisher said: “Since Declan came in, he’s been helping me improve all aspects of my game, and his faith in me has been amazing. Alongside the guidance from Paddy and Tim, I’ve been able to work on key areas of my game, and I’m always aiming to make an impact - whether that’s by scoring, creating chances, or putting in the hard work for the team.

“Scoring six goals this season has been a solid start, but I know there’s so much more to come. It’s about continuing to push myself, adding more goals to my tally, and contributing in every way I can to help the team succeed. Friday’s goal was a great confidence boost and I’m determined to build on that as we enter the second half of the season.”

Glentoran could be boosted with the availability of their trio of winter signings - Christie Pattisson, Shane McEleney, and Ciarán Coll - following the opening of the transfer window on 1st January 2025.

Adding an extra layer of intrigue to Tuesday’s clash, Shane McEleney could make his Glentoran debut and potentially line up against his brother Patrick McEleney, who also made a move during the winter window, joining Ballymena United.

David Fisher, meanwhile, praised the support of the Glentoran fans, particularly during the demanding run of away fixtures in December and highlighted their role in driving the team forward.

Fisher added: "The fans have been absolutely incredible. Despite a gruelling schedule of away games in December, they turned out in huge numbers every time, creating an atmosphere that drives us on. Friday night against the Welders, in freezing conditions, was no different – their support was unbelievable.

“When I came off against Portadown and walked around the pitch, the reception from the supporters gave me goosebumps. It’s moments like that which make you realise just how special this club is to play for. I’ve no doubt they’ll turn up in their numbers again at the Showgrounds on Tuesday night and once again cheer us on."
