On Saturday evening (21st October) Glentoran Women seek to add to the Sports Direct Women’s Premiership trophy when the meet Cliftonville Ladies in the Final of the Electric Ireland Women’s Challenge Cup at the National Stadium at Windsor Park.
The squad is looking to win this cup for a record equalling fifth consecutive time. Matching the Glens own record of five wins between 2006-2010. So far the Glens have won the cup 10 of the 17 times it has been played for, with club stalwarts such as Kelly Baillie, Jess Foy, Nadene Caldwell, Demi Vance and Ashleigh McKinnon all heavy multi medal winners. In fact Kelly, Jess, Nadene, Ashleigh, Joely Andrews and Rachel Rogan all have winners’ medals for all 4 of the recent finals.
This incredible squad has won no fewer than fifteen senior trophies in the last seven seasons, including a four-trophy clean sweep in 2021, three league titles and the so far four consecutive retentions of the Electric Ireland Challenge Cup.
This year’s Premiership win was a remarkable one as the squad had to do it undefeated. They won all but 2 of their 18 games, those being 2 draws against Saturday’s opponents, an excellent Cliftonville Ladies team. In the course of the 18 games they scored 101 goals, conceding just 7. In fact the Glens’ last league defeat was May 2022, a 29-game unbeaten run in the competition. Their last defeat in the Electric Ireland Cup was over 6 years ago, another proud statistic.
Glentoran boast the province’s top scorer for the season, 20-year-old Kerry Beattie who scored an incredible 35 goals, averaging almost 2 goals per game she played. In total they have 5 players who’ve scored in double figures this season – Joely Andrews (20 goals), Emily Wilson (16), Caragh Hamilton (13 – now in full time football in England with Lewes Town) and Demi Vance (10).
Head Coach Kim Turner and her management team of Gemma Quigley, John Spence, Andy Smyth, Emma Donaghey and Emma Traynor would love to see a big turnout on Saturday night to give the team the best possible support as they chase a third League & Cup Double in 4 seasons. They absolutely deserve it!
